Even in our neighborhood, things are looking greener and nicer. My mother-in-law Carol and I walked out to Germia Park yesterday, and we were delighted see a new walking path that took us nearly the full 1.5 miles from our apartment to the park. Normally, we'd be on the sidewalk...or rather, the street, since the sidewalks are used for parking cars. It's a dusty road, with not much greenery until you reach the big park. However, our new path cuts through a quieter area of trees and houses. Far more beautiful and peaceful.
But God has a way of showing up just as we're ready to throw in the towel. My health finally took a positive turn, and my spirits soon followed. As I gained the strength to walk around town, I saw all these beautiful changes and felt the new lightness of the city. I was amazed at how different Prishtina was—how it seemed to have burst to life—even within the span of a couple months. I was reminded of my favorite chapter of the Bible, Isaiah 55: You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.
Gratitude and a big dose of perspective hit me.
Maybe the trees aren't clapping just yet...but at least we have trees now!
Maybe the mountains aren't singing yet...but when they do, we'll be in the center of it, here in this dusty valley.
And until that day, I believe that I have access to the joy and peace that comes from God. I will get tired, and my health will fail, but he will renew my strength. He will bring life to me and to my city. He will make all things new.
Be blessed and made new,
Liz (and Sam)
PS: Prayers for continued health and strength are much appreciated!
