On How We Are

11/8/2013

When two Albanian friends see each other on the street, they stop and shake hands. Si jeni? (How are you?), they ask one another. A je mire? (Are you well?) Only once everyone has pronounced themselves mire (good) can they move along with their day. It's a lovely little custom, one we've been happy to make habit.

Though most of you are unlikely to run into us on the street, I think we can (and should) have these moments together now and then.

Here's what's good with us these days...

Sam and I in Ohrid, Macedonia, where we recently had a nice holiday with friends.
Sam is well into his second year at Prishtina High School and is taking on a lot of new responsibilities. He was elected chairperson of the faculty senate, as well as faculty representative to the in-country governing board. Which basically means that he gets to hear the concerns and ideas of the staff and pass them on to the people who can do something about it. He's also been helping to build curriculum for the fine arts program, which PHS is hoping to expand in the coming years. He is so wonderfully suited to all of these leadership positions, but we would still covet your prayers in this area. Sam is definitely feeling the weight of responsibility, and it's just an awful lot of work for one tired teacher. Pray that he will continue to lead well and get enough rest!

If you read this blog, you pretty well know what I do: write, cook, keep Sam alive, etc. What you might not know is that I've been continuing to write for Awaken Magazine, and will have another piece coming out very soon. It's about you all—you supporters/cheerleaders/friends—so you'll probably want to read it. And while you wait for that little gem, you can catch up on my other articles here. Recipes, Buddhists, Jesus...everything you want and more!

And finally, we are almost fully funded in monthly support—hurray! We still rely on surprise (i.e. non-pledged) gifts to meet our monthly needs, but we don't have a problem with this at all, because they always seem to come in, and they are so much fun to receive! (Surprise, here's $50!) It has been a huge blessing not to have to worry about fundraising this year, so thank you thank you thank you to everyone who made that possible!

There you have it—we are good!  How are you?

Love,
Liz (and Sam)

I can see Sam taking on more of a leadership role - good for him. At least he has some wonderful assistance at home. Your recent pictures have been so good. Looking forward to seeing you soon. Lots of love to both of you.
